Today's recipe will not be for everyone, especially those being mindful of calorie consumption, but it will be those looking for a delicious twist on the ordinary. This Maple Bacon Donut Grilled Cheese is probably not something you'll want on the menu on a regular basis, but it is absolutely worth trying, just for the fun of it.
The link above is a set of instructions, but they are a little light, so I went a-Googling for clarity and more direction. I started with glazed yeast donuts from the bakery section of our local Kroger. I sliced them in half and turned the cut sides down. Then, I added a slice a Muenster cheese as recommended in the original recipe. Several recipes I looked at used cheddar, so I added a layer of cheddar, bacon (one slice per sandwich), and a little maple drizzle. I buttered the cut side of the donuts, and was pretty generous with the butter (but there could have been more). I proceeded as usual for the making of grilled cheese. One caution, and the reason to generously butter, is that the sugar melts down and makes the edges of the donut stick to your skillet. It makes them a little tough to flip.
These were so fun. The melty cheese and bacon balanced against the sweet donut was yummy and different. I definitely would choose more cheddar or stronger/saltier cheese in the future. The Muenster didn't stand out too much because it was so mild. You can decided if you want the maple syrup on there or not. I didn't feel like it added much to the already sweet donut. Maybe maple bacon would be better? Whatever you choose, pick your favorites and give this a whirl. You won't be sorry.
