Birthday Smackdown

Selecting a birthday treat for my husband is always a challenge. Over the years we've done variations of his favorite things--chocolate, peanut butter, toffee, coconut, bacon--and more than once we've combined a few things. He has a sweet tooth, and he give anything with sugar a whirl, so it's more the difficulty of making the selection, rather than difficulty making him happy.

For this year's selection, I went with Maple Bacon Chocolate Smackdown. The pie is the consistency of pecan pie, but the filling is quite different. There's a healthy dose of bacon, plus walnuts, maple syrup, and chocolate chips (I used a combo of dark and semi-sweet). It's a relatively easy pie to make, especially if you purchase the crust like I did. From there, you make the filling and stir all the other things in. Easy. Peasy.

We all enjoyed the salty flavor of the bacon against the sweet other flavors. My daughter said it tasted like chocolate chip pancakes with bacon on the side. Although I like walnuts, I like pecans more, so if I ever make it again, I would try the pecans, especially if they are salted. I would say this was another birthday success, given that the pie was gone in just a day or two, and at least one serving was eaten for breakfast. But hey, it had bacon right?!😂

This sounds so sweet!! I am not a huge fan of desserts. I have to be craving it to want it. I have never really liked nuts either. However, I am always down to try things. With the bacon, I think it would balance out the sweetness and be really good. I do agree that pecans are better than walnuts.

This is definitely an interesting flavor combo, anytime I hear bacon as part of a dessert I am so weary of the taste. I would definitely give it a try since I do like chocolate and I have heard bacon is one of the favorite salty add-ons to desserts.

I would definitely be scared to try something like this because of the bacon but I'm a sucker for a sweet and salty combo (would still give it a try). Having it for breakfast is hilarious but I don't blame them though! I've recently made my girlfriend a tres leches cake for her birthday and for it being my first time, it was actually good. So cheers to us celebrating the ones we love with a special treat.:)
