When We Became Star Wars People...

I grew up in the heyday of Star Wars fandom. I was not a fan. Mostly because I wasn't allowed to see the movies, and especially because the fantasy nature of the whole thing didn't appeal to my elementary school self. In college I finally got around to watching the original trilogy, and found the special effects to be woefully underwhelming and storyline equally lame. It was good vs evil, I'd seen it a million times.

I sustained my indifference for a very long time, and then at some point, my child was sucked into the Star Wars vortex. She maintained a neutral stance for a very long time, and then slowly, slowly became enamored with the side stories (she doesn't like the original trilogy either). As it's slowly become a thing in our house, I've felt compelled to celebrate the day. (Who am I kidding, I'll celebrate anything if food is involved!)

This year, I decided to make the Disney World favorite Wookie Cookie Sandwiches. Full disclosure: I've never actually eaten these at Disney, so I have no idea if they are close or not. These were pretty easy to make. The cookie is just a pretty regular oatmeal cookie, and watch out for the spreading as warned by the original blogger! The filling is pretty tasty. I expected it to taste a little more like marshmallow creme, but instead it tasted like a more mellow buttercream. If I make them again, I'll add just a pinch of salt because we love the way it balances the sweet in the frosting.

The Wookie belts were a bit of a challenge. I had read several different recipes trying to decide what would work best. Some recommended Hershey bars, others suggested piping melted chocolate, and some went the Tootsie Roll route. I decided on Tootsie Rolls because the bars seemed like they would just break, and I steer clear of piping bags if I can help it. The Tootsie Rolls weren't bad, but it did take a few practice runs to see what shape I liked best. I eventually rolled them in my hands to the desired length, and then flattened them on the counter so they didn't look like earthworms. I used a tube of premade white icing for the white dots.

These were fun to make and eat. Even though our celebration wasn't big, they provided just the right touch.
